Reforestation With Lotus Tribe And TreeSisters

Growing up in the heart of the redwood forests of Northern California turned us into tree huggers at a young age. Awed and inspired by these beautiful beings, we have been in a life long love affair with trees of all kinds. That's why, when we decided that we wanted to practice philanthropic entrepreneurship, our first choice was to team up TreeSisters. Picking the right NGO to partner with is a formidable decision and one we did not take lightly. Not only does TreeSisters consistently support the earth and its inhabitants (both human and non human), they also support women, all while working to do so within the role of planetary caretakers.

Here at Lotus Tribe, we try our very best to provide you, the consumer, with the most comfortably fitting, affordable, ethical and natural fiber yoga clothing to wearWe use our business to bring our morals into the world through our commitment to help heal the environment; and we do it with your help, and that of our partner TreeSisters.

For every item purchased from Lotus Tribe Clothing, we plant one tree in your name (and that is EVERY ITEM, not one tree per purchase!). So far, we have planted over 30,000 trees with TreeSisters. We are committed to radical reforestation as a way to counter the effects of climate change by sequestering carbon, protecting critical habitat and supporting women all over the world.
So who are TreeSisters? What are their principles? How do they aid in global reforestation? How does Lotus Tribe contribute?

Who are TreeSisters?

TreeSisters is an amazing organization that supports feminine based leadership through global tree planting initiatives, focusing on reforestation, community, indigenous wisdom, and  fostering global partnerships. Run by and for women, in numerous locations around the world, with an emphasis on the equatorial regions. They provide income and purpose to the local women they work with. We couldn't be more proud to partner with this amazing organization and be part of the work they do!

TreeSisters is a UK registered social change and reforestation charity that places tropical forest restoration into everyone’s hands. Through the contributions of individuals and businesses that give back to nature every month, TreeSisters has so far (as of March 2025) funded the planting of over 28.4 million trees, across the globe. Read more about their planting projects here.

They want to rapidly accelerate tropical reforestation by inspiring and channeling women's Nature Based Feminine Leadership into global action. They encourage feminine leadership by providing resources, experiences and communities that inspire personal and collective action on behalf of the trees. Their vision is to create a world where nature and people flourish in connection, equity, and harmony and their mission is to:

-Partner to facilitate and inspire ethical forest restoration.

-Center women and gender equity in their work.

-Inspire connection with nature to promote a consciousness shift from consumer to restorer.

What Is TreeSistsers' Reforestation Strategy?

They plant trees to restore ecosystems and livelihoods, while increasing protection against the extremes of climate change in multiple regions of the tropical forest belt. They do this in ways that recreate and restore natural forest ecosystems using indigenous species, fostering local knowledge and skills, and promoting women's participation. They strive to do it intelligently, appropriately, respectfully and successfully.

Tropical forests are more than 'the lungs' of our world- they are the beating heart of the hydrological cycle, sequestering the atmospheric carbon dioxide that is driving climate change and providing the most biodiverse regions on earth. When trees are removed, vibrant ecosystems are often over farmed, eroded and rendered infertile, in a cascade effect that is mirrored with social decline, grinding poverty and climate extremes. As weather stabilizers, rain creators and cleansers, they are intimately tied to our health and our food. They are ecological healers, crucial for biodiversity and major carbon sinks that absorb excess atmospheric carbon that otherwise acidifies our oceans, clogs the air we breathe and contributes to extreme weather conditions. We cannot live without them, and we are losing them at staggering rates. Destruction needs to stop and restoration needs to become the new norm.

"We envision a world where it is normal for everyone to protect and restore both themselves and the world. "

-TreeSisters

Reforestation can rapidly reverse these trends, providing critical habitat, stabilizing and nourishing the soils, restoring watersheds, revitalizing dry springs and providing good quality water to large populations living downstream.

At TreeSisters, the wisdom held by indigenous peoples is deeply valued and they take a stand to protect the vital role the local indigenous people play in steering humanity back into the right relationship with Mother Nature. TreeSisters works hard to ensure that their reforestation projects involve local leadership, so that the real needs of local communities on the ground are met.

A key element to always keep in mind, is that TreeSisters' reforestation projects occur in rural areas of developing countries. Communities that live in these areas are heavily dependent on the surrounding trees and forests for their livelihoods. The effects of these programs reach beyond the forests themselves and into the very hearts and lives of these people.

The TreeSisters restoration strategy focuses on 6 key elements:

1.Restoration & protection of forests & trees-

Reforestation continues to be core to our mission, and we want to see deforestation reducing and forests flourishing around the world. Restoration that supports people, places and landscapes will be supported under this priority.

2. Community Led-

Local communities are best placed to determine the design and implementation of the restoration of their forests and lands. They know the environmental issues, local climate and the key issues that need to be addressed to result in sustained and successful restoration. Community led design and implementation of restoration, including outcome and success measures, will have longer-term and sustainable benefits for the forests and the people who live there.

3. Biocultural-

Biocultural restoration is an approach that recognizes and honors the intrinsic relationship between nature and people. It is the science and art of restoring not just ecosystems but also human and cultural relationships to place. It means that cultures are strengthened and revitalized alongside the lands with which they are intimately connected. By focusing on both the ecological and cultural aspects of restoration, we can help to heal our relationship with nature and promote a more sustainable future for all.

4. Nature Led-

We recognize that trees, wildlife, oceans, rivers, mountains, and all nature have rights and the right to thrive. Through this, we support restoration led by local communities, particularly those with deep experience listening to or working with the land they inhabit. By fostering local traditional knowledge, ensuring more ethical partnerships and sustainable forest stewardship, we can support the health of our planet and its inhabitants for generations to come.

5. Gender Equity & Women's Empowerment-

Women in forest communities have an important relationship and role within land and forests. There is growing evidence that by supporting women in reforestation, we will see more sustainable outcomes both for women and the forests they inhabit. Yet access to resources and legal rights for land are often inequitable. We will support gender equity by championing women foresters and supporting the community in identifying gender-based issues in the reforestation sector.

6. Working with Original & Indigenous People-

Indigenous and original people worldwide are leaders in the protection and restoration of their lands. These communities have often been historically deprived of their natural resources, land access, economic resources, biocultural rights and dignity. There is a need to give back the resources to whom they were taken. We must take responsibility for past injustices to create a more equitable future for all, leading to a harmonious world where everyone can thrive.
